Zallie’s 7th Annual Veteran Luncheon

Zallie’s Honors Veterans during 7th Annual Honored Veterans Luncheon Ceremony

It was yet another successful year for Zallie’s ‘Honor Our Veterans’ Memorial Luncheon for the books! Over 40 South Jersey veterans received the red carpet treatment as they attended their designated store for an afternoon of delicious, store made food and fun with their friends and loved ones.

In preparation of the upcoming event, PHL17’s own reporter, Matt Alba, paid a visit to the West Berlin ShopRite for a preview of the luncheon ceremony. Joined by Matt was Giuliana Zallie, Dircector of Marketing for her family’s stores, and previous veteran honorees David Schimpf, a Vietnam War Vet, and Carl Letizia, a Korean War Vet.

The event was held Saturday, May 19th, from 11:30am-1:30pm at each of the seven Zallie’s store locations including Williamstown, Chews Landing, Sicklerville, West Berlin, Laurel Hill, Glassboro, and West Deptford. This year’s luncheon took place on Armed Forces Day, a holiday that encourages people to show their gratitude to military members for their selfless service.

Each year, the Zallie family and their nearly 2,000 ShopRite associates look forward to hosting this wonderful event in each of their seven stores as a way to give back to the community and recognize local veterans for everything they have sacrificed for our freedom.

With the assistance of local VFW posts within the surrounding areas, six veterans per store location were identified as an honoree to attend the ceremony. Each selected vet was permitted to bring up to four guests to attend in their honor.

Once arrived, each guest was kindly escorted to the ceremony by one of the store’s friendly associates. Guests were brought to the café, which was beautifully decorated head-to-toe in patriotic décor and military flags representing the five branches being honored- Navy, Marine Corps., Army, and Coast Guard.

As each of the six guests and their family arrived, the ceremony opened with a welcoming by the store’s store director. Honorees were then recognized one-by-one and asked to come up and obtain their certificate of appreciation for their service.

Dignitaries in the surrounding communities of each store attended the event to show their support for the local heroes they look up to. The local police departments, EMT, Girl Scout troops, and even the mayor were just a few whom attended.

Following the opening speech, each guest was welcomed to partake in the store-prepared hot buffet, served to them by the store’s thoughtful associates. Guests feasted upon a menu of Zallie’s Own catering items including chicken parmigiana, penne with marinara, cheddar and plain meatloaf with gravy, ‘garlicky’ mashed potatoes, and fresh green beans. Dessert included a full size scrumptious sheet cake displaying insignias representing each branch of the military, baked and decorated by each store’s master bakers.

In additional to this year’s luncheon, all Zallie stores were excited to announce their newly added promotion which offers all active and retired military personnel a 5 percent discount, with proof of ID, on any in-store purchase made that Saturday as well as every Monday beginning May 21st.

As the event came to a conclusion, each of the six honored veterans were given a generous gift package including a $200 TD Bank gift card, a patriotic floral arrangement made by Zallie’s Own talented florists, and a gourmet fruit and cheese basket, which were kindly transported to the guests’ vehicles by the store’s staff.

Zallie’s is committed to giving back to the communities they serve and will continue to honor veterans in their local communities year after year!
